Optical communications system for short range data transfer – to 500m water depth
Ideal for use by divers and on small ROVs
The AQUAmodem Op2L is a lightweight version of the standard optical modem, designed for use by divers and on small ROVs. Using established technology, the optical modem allows short range interrogation, commanding and data download from underwater equipment. The AQUAmodem Op2L is compatible with any instrument with an RS232 serial interface, including Aquatec’s AQUAlogger and HYDROlog ranges, and can replace costly ROV mateable connectors or cables, resulting in economical operations and greater flexibility.
Ideal for use with small ROVs
- The new instrument is three times lighter than the standard optical modem, weighing only 1kg in air, and neutrally buoyant in water, making it ideal for use on small ROVs.
- Depth rated to 500m, the AQUAmodem Op2L is suitable for applications in oceanographic, environmental and coastal research, as well as offshore energy industries.
Cost-effective
- The AQUAmodem Op2L provides an economical alternative to deep-water communication systems in shallow water regions.
- The modem can replace costly ROV mateable connectors or cables, resulting in economical operations and greater flexibility.
- The latest version is also interchangeable with Aquatec’s original optical modem, and can reduce expenditure costs when combined with existing systems.
Innovative design
- The AQUAmodem Op2L allows operators to have access to data subsea, which can be particularly useful at times when it is impractical to retrieve the monitoring instruments.
- The AQUAmodem Op2L is compatible with any instrument with an RS232 serial interface, including Aquatec’s AQUAlogger and HYDROlog ranges.
Ready to use
- We supply you with everything you need to get started, including cables and manuals.

Q: Is the modem set up for one or two-way communication?
The AQUAmodem® Op2L is designed to be used to transfer data from an instrument subsea, without the need for a subsea connection. Under the standard application, one modem would be connected to an instrument gathering data. The other would be connected to an ROV or held by a diver, and be used to ‘wake up’ the first modem and receive the transferred data.
